Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I would like to disable StuffIt SpaceSaver(tm), but the control panel gives me this warning: "Turning Space Saver off will make compressed files inaccessible." What does it mean?

A: When SpaceSaver is disabled expansion of SpaceSaver compressed files is possible but no longer transparent. This is why SpaceSaver automatically displays that warning dialog.
There are two main steps you need to perform in order to safely remove SpaceSaver from your machine, expand all SpaceSaver compressed files and remove the ~StuffIt SpaceSaver control panel.

Here's how to expand your SpaceSaver compressed files:

1. Make sure SpaceSaver is loaded.
2. Decide if you want to use the Magic Menu or StuffIt Expander to manually expand the compressed files.
3. Open your hard drive and select a few items. (You can hold down the [Shift] key to select multiple items.) We recommend that you expand a few items at a time rather than expanding all your SpaceSaver compressed files at once.
4. Hold down the [Option] key as you drag the selected items onto the StuffIt Expander icon (or as you choose 'Expand' from the Magic Menu). Keep holding down the [Option] key until the preferences dialog box appears.
5 Select the 'Expansion' icon on the left side of the dialog box. You will see four major options on the right side of the dialog box.
6. Set the preferences to the following:

Expand StuffIt SpaceSaver Files - ON

Expand Archives - OFF

Expand Encoded Files - OFF

Continue to expand (if possible) - OFF

7. Click the 'OK' button. The selected items will be expanded.
8. Selct another group of items on the hard drive and repeat steps #4-#7. (Note: You do not need to decompress the System Folder as SpaceSaver does not touch it.)
9. Repeat steps #4-#8 until you have expanded all the items on the top level of the hard drive.
10. Find the ~StuffIt SpaceSaver control panel by opening the System Folder then the Control Panels folder.
11. Place it in the Trash and restart your computer.
