Q: When I build my installer to floppy disk size segments, it runs fine from the hard drive but when I copy the installer on the floppy disks, my Installer keeps asking for Disk One over and over again. It only happens on certain machines. What is the problem? A: On a low level, this happens when the finder or some other process feels it has to communicate with the installer. The resource manager may need to get a resource that has been purged or was not pre-loaded. Virus checkers may think they have to check the running applications to make sure they haven't been modified. The finder may need to update a window and so it's sending update events to all current processes (including the installer). There are also many other reasons different applications, extensions, or other processes may feel they need to communicate with the installer. Some things to watch out for when building or running the installer are:
One other thing that has been very successful at eliminating this problem is the "ShutDownIBeg.rsrc" included with InstallerMaker. This InstallerMaker Extension shuts down all current processes including the finder, hence there are no other processes open to communicate with the Installer. There are a few caveats surrounding this extension that are enumerated in a text file distributed with InstallerMaker in the same folder as the extension. An additional caveat not mentioned in that document is the caveat that InstallerMaker's restart feature is incompatible with the ShutDownIBeg.rsrc. If your installer has this problem and you need to restart, InstallerMaker technical support has a ShutDownIBeg.rsrc that restarts the machine itself. If you need this please contact InstallerMaker technical support at dev.support@aladdinsys.com.
