Aladdin Systems' StuffIt Expander Freeware Updated

New version is faster, more intelligent, cross platform savvy and it's free

Watsonville, CA (May 7, 1996) ÑStuffIt Expander(tm) 4.0, from Aladdin Systems, Inc. is now available. It's an update to the company's award-winning freeware product which gives Macintosh users an easy way to expand compressed files downloaded from online services or the Internet. StuffIt Expander has millions of users, especially since it is freely distributed and is easy to use with its drag-and-drop functionality.

StuffIt Expander 4.0 expands files from the most popular archive-based compression formats found on the Macintosh: StuffIt(tm) and Compact Pro(tm). StuffIt Expander will also expand file (.sit) BinHex and MacBinary formats, such as those commonly found on the Internet.

New StuffIt Expander Features

  • It is faster, especially on a Power Macintosh.
  • It is more intelligent. Expander is no longer dependent on using file name extensions.
  • A "Create folder" preference has been added for multiple items in an archive. A user can expand a group of files loose into an existing folder, or optionally create a new folder to enclose the whole group of expanded items.
  • A "Cross Platform" preference was added to the preferences panel. It now supports a text conversion option if you are using a non-Macintosh-based expansion engine (.uu, .zip, and .arc).
  • Supports StuffIt (.sit), Compact Pro (.cpt), BinHex (.hqx), and MacBinary (.bin). With Expander Enhancer (shareware) a user can now expand TapeArchive files (.tar). Other formats that Expander Enhancer supports include AppleLink (.pkg), ZIP (.zip), ARC (.arc), QWK (.qwk), gzip (.gz), Unix Compress (.Z), UUcode (.uu) and SapceSaver files (for use when SpaceSaver is not present).
  • Now supports multi-file and segmented files for BinHex. Expander handles multiple files contained in a single text document as well as a file segmented into several pieces.
  • Utilizes Internet Config (if present) when expanding non-Macintosh-based files to determine what file type and creator to give each file.
  • With version 4.0, StuffIt Expander's capabilities are enhanced when used in conjunction with "DropStuff with Expander Enhancer(tm)," a shareware product available from Aladdin. When a user installs both StuffIt Expander and DropStuff with Expander Enhancer, Expander will handle UUcode decoding of multiple files in a single text document as well as a segmented file. It no longer requires specific "header" lines when decoding.
  • Better support for AppleScript/Apple events.

StuffIt Expander 4.0 is copyrighted, free software. It is primarily distributed through online information services, bulletin board systems, the Internet, user groups, and freeware/shareware collections. All Aladdin freeware and shareware software is available from the various Aladdin online forums, including CompuServe, America Online, AppleLink, and the Internet.
