Aladdin Systems Announces Major Upgrade of StuffIt Deluxe -- Faster and More Internet SavvyStuffIt Browser(tm) allows archives to be opened like folders in the Macintosh FinderWatsonville, CA (March 25, 1996) --Aladdin Systems today announced StuffIt Deluxe(tm) 4.0, a major upgrade to the company's award-winning flagship product. Some of the significant enhancements of StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 include better integration with the Finder, more Internet support, improved e-mail support, increased speed for compression and expansion operations, SpaceSaver(tm) icon "tagging", and drag and drop segmentation. "StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 represents an evolution in how users can work with StuffIt archives. Since archives in the Finder now behave much the same way as folders, it broadens the uses of archives beyond backups and reducing file transmission time, to include helping to organize files on hard drives and servers while saving disk space," said Marco A. Gonzalez, president of Aladdin Systems. True Finder Integration Aladdin has further developed its True Finder Integration(tm) by bringing more compression, expansion, and file translation features into the Finder. A new addition to StuffIt Deluxe is the True Finder Integration (TFI) control panel which acts as a central location where users can tailor all Aladdin technologies integrated into the Finder. The TFI control panel features an extensible architecture including three TFI "extensions": StuffIt Browser, Magic Menu(tm), and Archive Via Rename(tm). StuffIt Browser StuffIt archives can now be viewed and manipulated in the Finder because of StuffIt Browser. The StuffIt Browser makes it easy to create, examine and modify archives -without leaving the Finder. Double-clicking an archive instantly displays the contents of the archive in a new window. StuffIt Browser is a convenient time-saver because users don't have to wait for the StuffIt Deluxe application to open to work with their archives. To UnStuff a file from a StuffIt archive, the user simply drags the file from an open archive onto the desktop. Conversely, a file can be Stuffed into a StuffIt archive by dragging it onto an open archive window. This function works under System 7 Pro (7.1.1) and higher. The StuffIt Browser also makes it easier for users to archive files on their hard drive using specific criteria. Using Apple's Find File utility, users can search their hard drive for files to archive based on file name, date modified, etc., and then drag and drop files from Find File into a Browser window, or even onto a closed StuffIt archive. Magic Menu Magic Menu, a Finder menu of compression options, has appeared in previous StuffIt Deluxe versions, but its functionality has been improved in 4.0. The new Magic Menu supports more Internet archiving and encoding file formats including "tar" (from Unix systems) and segmented and multi-part UUencoded and BinHex files. The compression formats Magic Menu can now expand include: StuffIt (.sit), Compact Pro (.cpt), AppleLink (.pkg), ZIP (.zip), ARC (.arc), gzip (.gz), tar (.tar), Unix Compress (.Z), UUencode (.uu), BinHex (.hqx), MacBinary (.bin), and SpaceSaver-compressed files. Besides expanding compressed files, Magic Menu can Stuff files and join files segmented with a StuffIt product. Users of Qualcomm's Eudora (see "Internet Improvements", below), QuickMail (CE Software) and Microsoft Mail can easily send mail using Magic Menu's "Stuff and Mail" feature. A user can still select a file that has been compressed in one of many compression formats found online and expand it by simply choosing "Expand" from Magic Menu. Archive Via Rename Another True Finder Integration feature which makes compression and expansion effortless is Archive Via Rename. A user simply adds ".sit" or ".sea" to a file or folder name and it will instantly be converted into a StuffIt archive or self-extracting archive. Conversely, by deleting the .sit or .sea from a file name, the file or folder will automatically expand. This feature has appeared in previous versions of StuffIt Deluxe, but it can now be configured from the True Finder Integration control panel. Internet Improvements StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 now allows users of Eudora to Stuff and mail a file or folder right from the Finder. By simply selecting an item in the Finder and choosing "Stuff and Mail" from Magic Menu, the file or folder is Stuffed into an archive and attached to a newly-created e-mail message. Other Internet improvements include better support of UUencoded and BinHex-encoded files in addition to expansion of tar archives from Unix systems. All of these features bring easy-to-use Internet tools right to users' desktops. "The Internet has become a focus worldwide," continued Gonzalez, "We are making products that respond to this demand by creating better technology that everyone can use." Faster Stuffing And Expansion StuffIt Deluxe 3.5 (the previous version) included the introduction of features accelerated for Power Macintosh, but StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 is now even faster. On a Power Macintosh, Stuffing now occurs up to 20% faster than before. The expansion of many file formats is up to 50% faster, including StuffIt, BinHex, ZIP, and others. New StuffIt SpaceSaver Tagging StuffIt SpaceSaver, Aladdin's transparent compression component, now features a new "tag icon" feature that users have been asking for. A user can configure SpaceSaver to superimpose a small "tag" on file icons which have been compressed with SpaceSaver. This allows users to quickly discern which files on their disk have been SpaceSaver-compressed. StuffIt SpaceSaver's transparent compression gives users an easy way to free disk space. When a file that has been compressed with SpaceSaver is opened, it is automatically expanded, and when the file is closed it can be automatically recompressed. Files may be SpaceSaver-compressed on-command by applying a user-defined label or keyword to files. A user may also choose to have SpaceSaver work during Idle Time (when there is no keyboard or mouse activity), SpaceSaver seeks files which have not been modified for a user-defined period of time, and compresses those files while the computer is idle. SpaceSaver thereby increases users' free disk space over time. Additional Facts About StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 New and improved drag and drop applications (or "drop boxes") are included with StuffIt Deluxe 4.0. To use a drop box, a user just selects a file or folder and drags it over to the appropriate drop box until it is highlighted, then releases the mouse. Many users appreciate the one-step ease-of-use that the drag and drop applications provide. DropSegment which allows users to segment files and StuffIt archives using a drag and drop interface, will ship with 4.0 . This feature allows users to fit a large archive on multiple floppy disks which can be restored from the floppies at any time. DropSegment can optionally create multi-disk self-extracting archives which anyone can UnStuff, even if they do not own a StuffIt product. StuffIt Deluxe also includes DropStuff which creates StuffIt archives, self-extracting archives and can optionally BinHex-encode archives for distribution over the Internet. DropStuff now Stuffs up to 20% faster than previous versions. StuffIt Expander, which provides the easiest way of expanding compressed and encoded files found online, includes improved support of Internet encoding formats, including UUencode and BinHex, and now supports expansion of tar archives from Unix systems. Deluxe 4.0 is faster at all expansion operations. DropCompress, another drop box included in 4.0 lets users quickly SpaceSaver-compress files for saving disk space. Other Information StuffIt Deluxe retains other capabilities found in previous versions, including the ability to encrypt data contained in archives. The StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 package comes with two comprehensive manuals which include tutorials to guide the user through the entire product. StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 is commercial software distributed worldwide and is available through major mail order houses and retail stores for a suggested retail price of $129.95. StuffIt Deluxe 4.0 is expected to ship at the end of March 1996.
